If you’ve been reading long, you know that I have a love-hate relationship with Florida. I love the beaches, but hate the snow birds that take over during “season”. I love the warm weather in the winter, but hate the never-ending heat of summer. For everything I love about Florida, there is something that I usually miss about sweet home Alabama.
While I’ll always miss good old southern cooking from Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, I don’t have to miss amazing fresh produce and seafood down here. Florida offers the freshest produce and seafood at reasonable prices, especially during the summer months. You can always find out what’s in season by checking out the Fresh From Florida website.
The low produce and seafood prices are great for me since the warm weather here has me in summer entertaining mode. I’m ready to entertain with lots of fresh produce and seafood. My all time favorite way to entertain my summer guests is with a low country boil with fresh Florida shrimp and sweet corn on the cob.
I also like to pick up colorful, locally grown food to wow my guests. Our grocery stores here usually label produce so I can tell where it is from. I just love walking through the produce section of the grocery stores here. There is so much to choose from, but my current favorite summer selections are blueberries, tomatoes, sweet corn and watermelon.
It’s usually no surprise to find that local in season produce is much cheaper than the food that is transported here. It tastes better too! Nothing tastes better than fresh local produce. My toddler can even tell the difference. As soon as the blueberries are out of season and we eat the ones from other states, he says he doesn’t like them anymore! I’m telling you, you can tell a difference! I love that these blueberries were grown near our old stomping grounds of St. Pete. I always try to buy from Wish Farms because it feels super local to me!
My boys are currently obsessed with watermelon. We go through one of these a week!
Fresh From Florida and the Florida Department of Agriculture guarantees fresh and delicious food that makes every recipe a win. I’m partnering with Fresh From Florida to bring you a delicious corn and green tomato salad in a couple of weeks. Here’s a teaser photo! I can’t wait to share this recipe with you.
