I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that there is no way that I know how to get a family talking during dinner since I only have young kids. Let me assure you that even though my kids are tiny, I was once a surly teenager myself. I remember all too well how much I hated to tell my parents anything about my day.
Before I give you the one question you need up your sleeve for dinner time, let me take a moment to point out that family meals don’t have to be fancy. Your loved ones will remember the important relationships in their lives, not how much time you put into dinner prep. That’s why I always have a frozen meal on hand. Always. There are some days where I just can be bothered with meal prep and I don’t want to be tempted to order take out.
This past week we had a frozen InnovAsian meal from Walmart.
They are located in the freezer meal aisle. Right now you can get a $2 off coupon. You know how much I love printable coupons! Get yours here: InnovAsian Coupon.
Back to the million dollar question. Somehow my parents always got us talking. I’m much older than my siblings so it was difficult sometimes for me to relate to them with the age gap. But one dinner question always got all of us talking, no matter our age. What is this amazing question? Here is the secret to dinner time success:
What was the best and worst part of your day?
It works every time.
Yet it’s so simple.
Even Robert at 3 years old can answer the question. Sure, he has some issues. He doesn’t understand the worst part of his day yet. His answer is always the same for best and worst. I have to say that I love that about him. I wish I could have the same kind of attitude where no part of my day was ever the worst.
Of course, my days are always great when dinner prep is easy! I love the convenience of keeping a freezer meal handy because it’s much cheaper than take out. On this particular day we had just come home from a play date and there was no way I was going to be able to prep a meal for everyone in 20 minutes if I had cooked from scratch.
I was able to prepare this meal in 20 minutes while the boys played outside with family. Then we sat down and enjoyed our no frills dinner. I think Robert is trying to come up with the best part of his day in this picture. It requires a lot of thought!

I love this question and try to ask it daily! It always opens up so much conversation! [client]
I love this question! Even my almost-three-year-old tells me what her favorite part of the day was. Sometimes it surprises me!
