WHy make your own dishwasher detergent?
Before I get to the 7 best DIY dish detergent recipes, I have to explain why you should be making your own dish detergent.
There are so many reasons. Here are a few of the reasons why I prefer to make my own dish washing detergent:
- Cost– store bought detergent costs an average of 40 cents a load compared to 2 cents for homemade detergents. Isn’t that crazy!? Two cents!
- It is easy– I know it sounds crazy, but making detergent takes 20 minutes max and includes ingredients that most of us have around our house or can easily buy at Walmart or Amazon.
- Healthier- a lot of cleaning companies use ingredients that cause allergies and are even known to be carcinogens. When you make your own detergent you know what you are putting in there!
- Eco-friendly- similar to the line above, a lot of companies use ingredients that harm our water reserves when they trickle into our ground water.
I’m the type of person who spends more money on cleaning supplies that are eco-friendly and healthy for our family. I follow the EWG’s guidelines here.
The problem is that a lot of these “green” products are much more expensive than regular products.
That is why I find it worth the time to make my own!
