Mess free Easter egg decorating + why I refuse to buy Easter candy

Decorating Easter eggs is a ton of fun with kids, but man, it can get messy fast. That’s why I love mess free Easter egg decorating. These dye free Easter eggs are so much fun to decorate with kids and they leave zero messes for mom to clean up.

Mess free Easter eggs are toddler friendly! Super easy (and mess free) way to decorate Easter eggs copy

I feel like a creative genius right about now. Not only did I entertain my toddler for a solid hour, we were able to do mess free Easter egg decorating. To make it even better, all of this cost $2. Total mom win.

Mess Free Easter Egg Decorating

I found the googly eyes and chalk eggs at the Target Dollar Spot. Where else, right? Random fact: Tom wants to buy a van. I told him I’m not ready for a car payment because I don’t want to give up buying random things at the Target Dollar Spot. Seriously, I don’t think I can stop. The addiction is real. I’d rather have two paid off cars and be able to buy crafts at Target than to have a car payment again.

Edited to add: We have since bought the van and I can still shop at the Target Dollar Spot. Thank goodness!

Googly eye easter eggs

Even though I love buying stuff at Target, I’ve officially decided not to buy Easter candy this year. If you know me in real life, you know that I’m not a crazy health nut. I’m all for sweets. I’ve even been known to give my children cinnamon rolls for dinner.

[bctt tweet=”I’ve officially decided not to buy Easter candy this year.”]

But when it comes to buying my kids candy for Easter, I’m against it. Personally, I think it is a colossal waste of money. The kids get so much candy from neighborhood, church, and family Easter egg hunts, that there is no reason for me to spend money on candy.

Easter eggs

There is another reason: we are still eating Halloween candy. It takes a while for us to get through candy in this house. Cookies and cake? That’s a different story. Don’t you dare leave a chocolate Costco cake in my house unless you want it to be consumed immediately.

Since our Easter bunny isn’t going to be bringing candy, I thought I’d share with you what our Easter bunny will be doing.

Easter eggs are so easy with googly eyes

First and foremost, our Easter bunny conversation includes a lot of Jesus talk. I’m trying really hard to associate Easter and Christmas with Jesus. At the risk of sounding corny, I want my kids to know the “reason for the season”.

I think I was pretty successful with Christmas. To this day, Robert thinks all birthday parties are in celebration of Jesus. We were even at the zoo a few weeks ago and saw a zebra celebrating his birthday. I told Robert it was the zebra’s birthday and he immediately corrected me and said, “No, Mommy, it’s Jesus’s birthday.”

Easter is a bit trickier. I don’t very well want to tell my not-yet three year old that we are celebrating Jesus’s resurrection. I don’t think he’s ready for that. But I do throw the name in there quite a bit. When we talk about Easter, we always talk about how much Jesus loves us. It’s the best I can do right now.

I’m sure he will learn to associate Easter with candy, and that is fine. I’m not writing this post to say that Easter candy is the devil. It’s not. Easter candy is wonderful. I like to save money when I can, and I refuse to spend money on Easter candy when we still have Halloween candy. I also refuse to give into holiday consumerism. As much as I’d love to buy some Reese’s eggs, I’m still eating my football eggs from the Super Bowl. There is no need for us to spend money on Easter candy.

You know what else bothers me about Easter? Easter baskets.

Can you believe that people spend up to $30(probably more) on baskets? Baskets. Not handmade baskets made by artists. But ridiculously cheap, poorly made, baskets.

You will find us with our dollar tree beach bucket at our Easter egg hunts. I like to think of it as beach chic.

It’s okay if you love Easter candy. Go for it! I’m a Halloween nut. I will never stop buying Halloween candy. We all have our strange little issues. Refusing to buy Easter candy just happens to be one of mine.

Luckily I have lots of googly eyes to throw in Robert’s Easter basket. I think he will be just fine with them.

What do you do for Easter? Candy? No candy? How do you talk to your kids about Jesus and Easter? Do you have any mess free Easter egg decorating ideas?

I decided to only do a little bit of candy this year because my kids will get so much from grandparents, egg hunts, etc.
One thing I really want to include in their Easter baskets this year are starter plants.

I love your decorated eggs, they’re so much fun with their goggly eyes. You and your son must have had so much fun making them. We bought some chocolate Easter eggs for various family members at the weekend, a usual purchase for us, and I have to say I almost fell through the floor when the shop assistant gave us the total bill! Amazingly expensive for a bit of shaped chocolate! #YumTum

I can’t get over how expensive holiday shaped candies are. Just wait, they will be half price the day after Easter. We may go pick up some Easter candy then. Lol!

That is a great win and a wonderful idea for mess-free Easter eggs. One of my (adult) sons is avoiding all sugar for the next three months so I won’t be buying Easter chocolate for the family this year – just a fun trinket and lots of healthy food for lunch.

I think a crafty Easter spent doing things together is much nicer than a bucket (or basket) load of chocolate. It’s crazy how much people spend on chocolate.

Also, are you able to add the link to my link party on your party page, so that others can find the party too please?

That makes so much sense! If you’re still eating Halloween candy, that’s really ridiculous to just add more to the pile! I sort of feel that way about giving or buying candy myself around Christmas – there’s just a ridiculous amount of it you get for free then too.

I love how many eyes that easter egg has :) I just did my easter basket shopping and I’m truly appalled by the prices. The way they make a pre-made basket look like it has alot of things in it is ridiculous. That should be illegal. Thanks for these tips, they are very helpful.

I love these eggs! They’re fun, and I’m sure the kids had fun decorating them. That’s part of the charm of Easter.
