Have you ever wondered when is the best time to buy certain items? I know I have! This series of blog posts is to help you figure out what items are at their cheapest prices each month. At the beginning of every month I’ll post what items you should be buying. Of course, only buy if you are seriously in the market. You can’t save money if you’re spending it! Here is the January edition of Best Time to Buy.
Holiday EVERYTHING
If you have been into any store since Christmas, you know that now is the time to stock up on wrapping paper, ornaments, trees and any holiday candy you want. Stores have all holiday items on sale for 50-90% off right now. It is a great time to find red decorations for Valentine’s day and gold ones for Golden Globes parties.
Clothing
You probably have all noticed that clothing stores have their biggest sales right after Christmas. They are all trying to get consumers in to spend their Christmas money and gift cards. You can find some pretty great deals right now at the mall and especially at outlet malls.
Fitness Gear and Equipment
Seems counter intuitive, but many places have sales to help with your New Year’s resolution. Stay put on the gym membership right now as those will go down in as little as a month.
Broadway Tickets
CNN says this is the best time to get your Broadway tickets for the less popular shows. The Fall and Winter are slow season for Broadway and the new year offers their greatest deals.
Tax Software Deals
Keep an eye out for deals from H&R Block and Turbo Tax. They can be up to 50% off this month for the early birds! No rush though as these sales will last into March.
Carpeting & Flooring
Apparently tons of people do re-flooring in preparation for the holidays. Now is the time to find the best deals on flooring prices.
Furniture
Furniture companies release new models in February and August which means stores are trying to clear out old inventory this month in order to make room for the new stuff. You could find some pretty great deals on clearance furniture right now. Could be a good time to buy a new couch for a Super Bowl party!
Gift Cards
Looking for specific gift cards? Many people are trying to sell their unwanted ones from the holidays. Check out exchange and selling sites from this article by Consumer Reports to get the best deals.
Linens and Bedding
I quote directly from LifeHacker here when I say, ever since John Wannamaker started the first “white sale” in 1878, January has been the best month to get bedding and other linens. Of course, just as with clothing, keep an eye out all year round, since retailers will put last season’s stuff on sale when new products come out. [Bankrate]
Motorcycles
Cold weather and ice don’t make you want to buy a motorcycle? Apparently your not alone. Motorcycle sales drop dramatically in winter which means it could be your month to score big.
Suits
My hubby needs to take this advice and go buy some new suits. January is not a big month for suit shopping so you can find some good deals, however you can’t always find the deals on the high end ones. Those are always pricey and probably worth it. Hint, hint, Tom.
Video Games
The holidays are huge for new releases which means they are now going down in price. If your gamer didn’t get what he or she wanted for Christmas, you should put those gift cards to good use on discounted games now.
Produce
Remember that this list is pretty subjective to where you live. For the most part all of these will be relatively low right now.
Oranges, Tangelos, Split Peas, Pears, Grapefruit, Tangerines, Broccoli, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Chard, Collards, Kale, Kiwi, Avocado, Cabbage, Spinach

I don’t know about your area, but Florida starts to get the best strawberries in February and March. Even though they aren’t at their peak yet, I’ve already seen the price drop and the flavor is finally coming back. Out of season strawberries flown in from California make me sad. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure they taste great in Cali, but they don’t taste too great by the time they make it all the way to SWFL.
Now it’s your turn! Did I miss anything? Let me know and I’ll add it!
