Have you ever wondered when is the best time to buy certain items? I know I have! That’s why this “best time to buy anything” series of blog posts was created. This post is here to help you figure out what items are at their cheapest prices each month, including best produce to buy in August and the national food holiday freebies and deals. Here are the best things to buy in August.
Of course, only buy if you are seriously in the market. You can’t save money if you’re spending it!
Best time to buy anything: August
Although the weather isn’t cooperating, summer is coming to close. The kids are headed back to school, beach vacations are wrapped up and well, the Fourth of July is becoming a distant memory. To me, that was always the biggest signal that summer was on its way out. That and retailers clearing out all summer stuff. Which makes it a great time to start planning for next summer with great buys!
The best things to buy in August are mostly geared to the end of summer sales and beginning of the school year. You can save on college gear such as linens, storage containers, and office furniture. The back to school sales also include kids’ clothing and school supplies. You can also score some good deals on swim suits and other beach/ pool gear.
August freebies and deals
- A&W- get a free root beer float from 2-8.
- Wienerschnitzel’s- free Mug Root Beer floats. To get your free drink, go to the hot dog chain’s web site and print out the coupon, or have it ready for display on your phone.
What to buy in August
Twin sized linens
Tis the season for college dorm room shopping. You will find tons of good deals on linens this month. Unfortunately, you may not find the best deals on full, queen or king size sets. If you are in the market for twin sets, this is the month to buy!
College kids need tons of storage containers and now is the time to buy. I always stock up on storage totes now, and then again right after Christmas when they go on sale again.
Need a new desk or office chair? Now is the time to buy. Check out good deals from office supply stores. Just don’t get suckered into buying a computer. They are at their highest prices this month since college kiddos need them.
Tax free weekends galore this month! Make sure to find out when your state does tax-free shopping and get in on the deals, even if you aren’t going back to school.
School supplies and back to school food
I have too much fun with the school supply shopping. Keep up to date with the specials at Office Depot, Staples and Office Max. They have weekly deals where supplies are as low as ten cents! This is also the best time to stock up on breakfast and lunch foods. You’ll notice that your supermarket has rock bottom prices this month on frozen breakfast items and pre-made lunch goodies such as Lunchables.

Swimwear and other summer items
Now is the time to stock up on swimwear, sunscreen, flip-flops, pool floats and beach items.
August in season produce
These items should be relatively inexpensive this month:
- Berries (blueberries, strawberries)
- Peppers (Chile and Sweet)
- Summer Squash

What to NOT buy in August
They are at an all time high this month as retailers push computers for college students.
Wait until Labor Day for the next sale.
