One of my best friends from high school recently joined Rodan and Fields. I’d just posted my first Direct Sales Series post when she told me she was thinking about joining the team. Crazy, random timing, right? It was such perfect timing that I had tons of questions for her and knew I had to include her in this series. Read on to hear all about Kayla’s experience joining Rodan & Fields.
- What made you start using the product?
One of my best friends had been talking about Rodan and Fields for a while and she has absolutely flawless skin, so I had always been curious about the line and how well it worked. After she decided to become a distributor she invited me to her launch party, but before going I spent a good bit of time looking up the products on the Internet myself. I was amazed at the before and after pictures. That’s how I really gauge products—testimonials or reviews and before/after pictures—if those are impressive, I want to know more. So, at the party I got to see the various product lines and decided the REVERSE was the best kit for me. I’ve struggled with age spots for several years now; I have fair skin so it’s really easy for me to get sun spots and once they’re there, they just get worse. I’m embarrassed now at how much time and energy I’ve put into trying to eliminate them. I have undergone laser treatments, microdermabrasions, hydrafacials, chemical peels, and retinol treatments; all with the intention of eliminating, or at least reducing, my age spots and hyperpigmentation. I’ve estimated that I’ve spent close to $2000 and none of it worked. Today, I’ve been using the REVERSE line for almost 40 days and my skin looks amazing. I can barely see the worst sun spot that’s on my cheek and people tell me every day how great my skin looks. I can tell you right now I will not be wasting any more of my money at the spa, unless I’m getting a massage!
- How did you make the transition from consumer to seller?
I started thinking about becoming a distributor after about 3 weeks of using the products. First, I realized that the products truly lived up to their hype and that I was going to be a lifelong customer. You can get certain discounts by becoming a Preferred Customer, but I knew the discounts were even better if I became a distributor. Second, I realized what a great business opportunity this would be for me. Again, I did a ton of research on the Internet about the company, their compensation plan, how to get started, etc. Finally, I reached out to my friend, told her I wanted to join her team and she signed me up!
- Did you have any hesitations about joining the team? If so, how did you get over them?
Of course I had hesitations; it’s normal and healthy to have hesitations before investing your time and energy into anything! Everyone has heard about “pyramid schemes” and you’re always wondering if these direct sales opportunities are just laced with hidden fees and ways to get money out of you. So again, I did my research and all of my fears were eliminated. It is in no way a pyramid scheme, in fact those are illegal, and the compensation plan at Rodan and Fields is one of the most generous of all direct sales companies. But I would encourage anyone who is interested in becoming a distributor to do your research. Anything that is a concern for you, look into it, ask questions from someone who knows, read the literature, that’s the best way to be prepared and confident.
- What are the biggest pros as a consultant?
Wow, there are a lot. Of course I get a huge discount on products for myself, which is amazing because I use the products daily. Also, the flexibility is amazing. I’m currently in law school, about to graduate and begin studying for the bar, so to say that I have ample free time would be a gross misstatement. I have very little free time, in fact. But most people that work as distributors begin by putting in 10-15 hours per week. The other aspect I really like is that you get to work with your friends. The idea is that you join a “team” and the other team members are there to guide you as much as possible. In other words, it’s not “Here’s your starter kit, now go start knocking door-to-door until the sun goes down.” When my team members and I plan business strategies it’s literally over coffee, or while we’re getting a pedicure, or over the phone while I drive to work. It’s usually when I would be spending time with them anyways. And of course, there are the financial perks! The company offers amazing incentives such as free vacations, free iPads, cash bonuses, and even a company car (a Lexus!) for those who bring in a certain sales volume. I think in this economy almost everyone could use some supplemental income and after reading story after story of people who have made it happen with Rodan and Fields, I thought, why not me?!
- Is it hard to build your client base?
Definitely not, your main “client base” is just your friends and family. It’s people you would probably preach about the products to anyways, and beyond that I will talk to anyone who has skin about Rodan and Fields. Here’s the thing, the products speak for themselves; they work so there’s no need to “push” them. I’m just excited to pass along this great product to anyone willing the listen because I know they won’t be disappointed.
- How much time goes into selling the product?
I think that’s very personal for each distributor and the company is built to support every person’s individual needs. There are no time quotas or requirements so everyone works at their own pace. For me, my time will be very limited. As I mentioned previously, I’m preparing to study for the bar exam in my state and start my legal career, which I love, so this will be sort of a hobby for me, but as far as what goes into actually “selling the product” it’s very simple. As a distributor, you have your own website, so if someone wants to buy a product from you, they can go onto your site, choose the products they want, and voila!
- What are the different “kits” and how do they work?
There are essentially four different “kits.” The REVERSE, which I use, is geared towards correcting dullness, hyperpigmentation, and sun/age spots. The REDEFINE is more of an anti-aging line; it works to correct fine lines and large pores. The UNBLEMISH is aimed at correcting acne and scarring and spotting that occurs from having acne. One of its best features is the use of sulphur, instead of super harsh acids, which is safe for women who are pregnant. The SOOTHE works similar to the REDEFINE and REVERSE, but it’s for those with very sensitive skin. Each kit lasts anywhere from 60-90 days.
- Are there any other products you are excited about trying yourself?
Yes! With the kit I bought as a distributor I got the REDEFINE Macro Exfoliator. It’s a handheld device that allows you to give yourself a professional grade microdermabrasion, at home, any time you want. Microdermabrasions are my weakness; I always felt like my skin was so smooth and radiant after getting them at the spa, but they cost $50 minimum and that’s not including the time it takes the make the appointment, go to the spa, etc. Now, I can do the exact same thing at home, every week, forever.

Hannah,
Please do not take this the wrong way but you are doing your friend Kayla a disservice by speaking about her consultantship with Rodan+Fields in the same section you are talking about mixing home based products and groceries in a make-shift chemistry experiment gone awry! No one should be mixing their own facial products at home without the proper knowledge and training. From the information you provided, it appears your expertise is limited in nature and scope of practice. Using the wrong formulations of the wrong ingredients at the wrong time and in the wrong way can be hazardous, especially to skin. Chemical burns are no fun. You may have the best intentions by providing your readers the information in this article and the ones linked above; however, you should properly disclose information about DIY skin care product combinations you are willing to promote on your website. Also, do you friend a favor and keep her Rodan+ Fields information separate from your home based DIY skincare recommendations. They are not comparable.
I see where you are coming from, but obviously you didn’t read all my posts about DIY skin care. I don’t suggest mixing chemicals at all! The strongest thing I suggest is tea tree oil which is best diluted with water, but won’t hurt you with the wrong dilution. It’s not like I’m suggesting making your own chemical peels! Thanks for the warning though!
