Decorating for holidays is one of my all time favorite things to do. Unfortunately, most of my holiday décor is in storage and I don’t have the energy to rummage through all the boxes just to find a couple Valentine’s Day decorations. I also don’t have the money to buy new décor. When we downsized I gave away all of my craft paper because I knew I wouldn’t have room for it here. I started to get sad that I wouldn’t have any cute decorations for Valentine’s Day. Just when I thought I couldn’t pull off a DIY Valentine’s Day decoration project, an idea came to me as a stepped on some rogue Cheerio’s (FYI- they are actually off brand Joe O’s from Trader Joe’s because I am way too cheap to buy real Cheerio’s- have you seen how expensive that stuff is?). I could use a cereal box to make a little door decoration since I don’t have a wreath. Here is what I did.
I drew a heart on the cereal box and cut it out.
Then I started writing with a red marker. I wrote the following: Hannah loves Tom, Tom loves Hannah, Robert loves Daddy, Daddy loves Robert, Mommy loves Robert and Robert loves Mommy. I used an envelope to keep my writing straight.
Finally, I hot glued some ribbon that was left over from Christmas to the back to allow it to hang from my wreath hanger.
I thought I had some Modge Podge, but I must have lost it in the move. I would have liked to protect this from the elements. It’s raining today and the humidity has made it curl. Luckily, our door doesn’t get wet from the rain. However, I assume this little decoration will only last this one year.
This just goes to show that you don’t have to spend money in order to spruce up your home for a holiday. This took me about 20 minutes start to finish and didn’t cost me a dime. I think Robert had fun too!
