If you’ve ever dreamed of having a magnetic chalkboard wall in your home, you’re in luck! This easy DIY project is a fantastic way to add both functionality and style to any space. Whether you’re creating a family command center, a kid’s playroom, or simply want a fun area to jot down notes, this magnetic chalkboard wall is a great addition to any home. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the entire process, sharing my personal tips and tricks along the way.
I wanted to create this magnetic wall with a chalkboard in my kitchen so that my kids could quickly and easily write down notes for me, and so I could do the same for them. Anyone else have a dry erase board on their college dorm room? Back before everybody texted everything, people would leave a little note for friends if they missed them. My kids don’t have cell phones yet, and we are always in and out of the house visiting friends in our neighborhood. I just knew I needed one of those cute chalkboard walls I’d seen on Pinterest! Coupled with a few magnetic coats of paint and I now have my dream magnetic blackboard surface perfect for leaving notes and keeping my kids informed on their calendar plans. Of course, we all really love the excuse to draw on the wall too!

How to Create a Magnetic Chalkboard Surface:
Step One: Find the Perfect Spot & Buy Your Supplies
The first step in creating your magnetic chalkboard wall is choosing the perfect spot. For my project, I decided on a blank wall in our kitchen that was in the perfect place for messages and a calendar. You could also consider the living room, an office, or even a hallway. Just make sure the wall is smooth and free of any sharp edges or imperfections that could cause issues later on. A quick trip to your local Home Depot or hardware store should provide you with everything you need, including the magnetic primer, chalkboard paint, and any tools you might need.
Supplies Needed for a Magnetic Chalkboard Wall:
Step Two: Prep the Wall
Before diving into the painting process, it’s important to prep the wall properly. Start by cleaning the entire surface with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris. You want a clean, smooth surface to ensure the best results with the paint. If your wall has any holes or cracks, be sure to fill them in and sand them down. It’s also a good idea to tape off any areas you don’t want to get paint on, like baseboards or adjacent walls.

Step Three: Apply the Magnetic Primer
Now comes the most difficult part of this whole process—applying the magnetic primer! This step is crucial for creating a magnetic chalkboard wall that actually works. When I first started, I didn’t realize how important it was to really shake up the can of magnetic primer. Trust me, you don’t want to skip this step. If you don’t shake the can well enough, the magnetic particles inside will settle, leading to uneven coverage and clumps on your wall.
When you’re ready to start, give the can a vigorous shake for at least five minutes. If you do end up with any clumps on the wall, you can use a popsicle stick to flatten them out. I found that applying at least seven coats of magnetic primer gave me the strongest magnetic surface. It might sound like a lot, but the more coats you apply, the better the magnetic hold will be. Let each coat dry completely before applying the next one. Of course, make sure to follow the directions on the can of primer to get the best results.
Step Four: Apply the Chalkboard Paint
Once your magnetic primer is completely dry, it’s time to move on to the chalkboard paint. I used Rust-Oleum chalkboard paint, which has a great finish and is easy to work with. Just like with the primer, you’ll want to apply multiple coats of chalkboard paint to get the best results. I ended up using three coats of the chalkboard paint, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next.
Using a foam roller will give you a nice, even finish without leaving brush marks. If you’re covering an entire wall, take your time and work in small sections. It might take a little bit of patience, but the end result is worth it. After you’ve applied the last coat of paint, let it dry for a long time—at least 24 hours—before you start using it.

Step Five: Choose the Right Magnets
Not all magnets are created equal, and it’s important to choose stronger magnets to ensure they’ll hold up anything you want to stick to the wall. Neodymium magnets work best for the particular type of magnetic paint that I used. You can usually find these at your local hardware store or on Amazon here. Be cautious with the kind of magnets you choose, especially if you’re planning to use the wall in a kid’s playroom.
Step Six: Season the Chalkboard
This is a step you don’t want to skip! Before you start using your new magnetic chalkboard wall, you need to season it. This process involves covering the entire surface with the side of a piece of chalk and then wiping it off with a dry paper towel or a damp cloth. Seasoning helps prevent “ghosting,” where the first things you write on the board leave a permanent mark.

Step Seven: Add Personal Touches
One of the best parts of a DIY project is making it your own. For my chalkboard wall, I decided to add a few personal touches through printables and poster sized calendars.

I also found that using popsicle sticks to smooth out any clumps of magnetic primer was a great way to ensure an even surface. If you’re using the wall for home decor ideas, like creating a family command center, consider using different colors of chalk paint to create designated areas for notes, calendars, and to-do lists.
Troubleshooting and Final Thoughts
If this is your first time tackling a DIY project like this, don’t be afraid to experiment. I had to reapply a few coats of the magnetic paint to get the magnetic surface just right, but it was worth the extra effort. If you notice that the magnets aren’t sticking as well as you’d like, try applying more coats of magnetic paint. And remember, the back of the can is a good place to check for any specific instructions or tips from the manufacturer.
Overall, this was an easy project that didn’t take too long, and the results were fantastic. Our magnetic chalkboard wall has become a great addition to our home, and I love how versatile it is. Whether we’re using it for notes, reminders, or just some creative chalk art, it’s a perfect spot for the whole family to enjoy.
If you’re a fan of home improvement projects, creating a magnetic chalkboard wall is a fantastic way to personalize your space. Plus, it’s a fun and functional addition to any room. Whether you’re an experienced DIYer or trying this for the first time, I hope this tutorial inspires you to give it a go. Happy painting!
