Not too long ago, I blogged about using essential oils to clean my toilets. The initial cleaning was amazing. My toilets were sparkling clean with absolutely no chemicals. Sure, it took some scrubbing, but I figured it was a good trade off to be chemical free. Exactly two months later and I’m OVER it!
Our toilets always looked disgusting. It got to the point where I had to scrub the things twice a week just to get them looking decent. Naptimes aren’t long enough for me to scrub the toilets twice a week. Plus, I was spending lots of money on baking soda and vinegar every week. There is no way I should go through those supplies as quickly as I did. Last week I caved and decided to switch from a DIY toilet cleaning bomb (tea tree oil, baking soda, and vinegar) to Clorox Greenworks gel (no this is not an ad for Clorox, I just happen to like the brand and find it cost effective).
I was excited to get home from Target and try out my new gel. You can imagine my disappointment when I had to scrub the toilets again in order to get them to look ok. I’m talking- still a nasty ring around the water- ok. It was gross.
At my wits end, I decided to ask a local hippie acquaintance for advice. She is the type of person who makes you feel guilty for not breastfeeding your baby until the age of 4 (side note- I’m ok with breastfeeding as long as possible, I’m not ok with people who make you feel guilty for not doing it- each to their own). She hangs out with the crowd that doesn’t believe in vaccinations (I don’t currently know her kid’s vaccination status). She quickly whispered under her breath that she uses bleach. She was totally ashamed that she couldn’t go completely “green”. I couldn’t believe my ears! Hippies use bleach? Really?
I immediately ran back to Target and got some bleach gel. Our toilets have never looked better and I have to admit that our bathrooms smell much fresher. I was so excited that I used the gel to disinfect out kitchen sink too. Something about the pungent smell of bleach makes me feel like my house is much cleaner.
I tried to go chemical free and I’m still making an effort. In the meantime, I’m going to enjoy the extra time I have during nap time now that I’m not scrubbing toilets as much. I also figured out why hippies have to use bleach. Since they don’t vaccinate their kids, they have to kill all the germs that come into their houses.
Any good advice on cleaning toilets? I bought the gel because the container is small and fits on the top rack of my supply closet, out of Robert’s reach. Once I find a safe and bigger storage area, I will transition to the big jug of liquid bleach that will give me more bang for my buck.
