Happy Friday! It’s time for another edition of Food Waste Friday. Every Friday I link up with The Frugal Girl and/ or Simply Being Mum for Food Waste Friday. I’ve been environmentally conscious about food waste since I was in college and this is a great way for me to keep tabs on what we waste in our house.

Here is how we did this week:
Food Waste Successes
1. made sorbet out of leftover blueberry syrup
I finally came up with a stellar wild blueberry recipe that I’ll share with you on Monday. Part of the recipe included a blueberry syrup/ sauce. I made way more sauce than we needed and had to figure out a way to use it up instead of wasting it, because sugar + fruit is too delicious to waste.
I didn’t even hide veggies in this. It was straight up sugar and I didn’t feel one once of guilt feeding it to my 2 year old. The blueberries are organic. That makes them healthy. Right?
It ended up being a little more like a thick smoothie or thin sorbet, but Robert didn’t complain. He kept asking for more “ice cream”.
2. no wasted strawberries
No spiders. No mold. How did that happen?
Food Waste Losses
3. beef broth bouillon cubes
Not sure how I let this stay in my cabinet for so long. It expired in 2008, which means we have moved it with us 3 times since it expired. Three times! I like to think of expiration dates as suggestions, but even I couldn’t bring myself to use these cubes that I must have had for at least 7 years.
To put things in perspective, I’ve only been out of college for 8 years which means that these cubes were probably the first groceries I ever bought for me and Tom.
3. fajita chicken
I’d like to think of this as a success and a loss. I feel like it is a success because I managed to make enough fajita meat for 6 people. I was very afraid I wouldn’t have enough meat. In fact, I was so afraid that I kept defrosting more meat to over compensate. Whoops.
I’ve mentioned before that I’m not the biggest meat eater (except for bacon and steak, which I can eat at any time). Chicken is my least favorite meat which is why I just couldn’t bring myself to eat it. This is what sparked the tiny little disagreement between me and Tom. I was trying to force him to eat these leftovers and he was tired of eating them. Sigh.
4. pineapple
No wasted strawberries this week, but we did waste a piece of pineapple. This little guy went bad and was too mushy for my liking. Don’t worry, the brown juice didn’t come from the pineapple. It was something else.
How did you do this week?
Sorry you got in hot water with your husband, I’m lucky that my hubby will keep on eating leftovers until they’re all gone if they need to be, and it’s not all that picky, despite having some stomach problems. Maybe next time you can reuse the chicken in a stew or a soup so it doesn’t feel like leftovers?
Toddlers are always sick, aren’t they? I don’t miss that. My youngest had lots of ear infections, due to seasonal allergies, I think. His pediatrician ended up putting him on a daily preventive dose of decongestant and once we started that, the ear infections pretty much ended. Make sure to wash his hands and face often, especially when he’s been around his play group or after coming back from the store or other public place. I’m the opposite of a germaphobe, but kids pick up all kinds of stuff from other kids and other people since they tend to touch many more things than we do.
We had some food waste as well. Sigh. I really would like a week when we don’t. I just realized that there were 4 moldy grapes in my lunch yesterday and I forgot to mention that on my own Food Waste Friday post. Off to amend it!
