Food Waste Friday
#FoodWasteFriday is a worldwide movement to bring awareness to the issue of food waste. Thirty one percent of food produced in America is wasted. This food is often sent to a landfill where it doesn't break down into soil like it would in a natural compost setting. Instead as food breaks down it releases methane gas, a powerful greenhouse house that is 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
Food has no place in a landfill. For centuries food was send back to the soil in order to enrich it and return nutrients and energy back to the Earth. Modern day agriculture has depleted the "need" for food recycling though our dependence on fertilizer. This has left us in a bad situation. Our waterways are polluted, algae and seaweeds are growing uncontrollably. Dead zones in our Gulf and oceans are killing our fisheries industry. All of this is directly tied to soil health.
This is why I focus on reducing food waste. Join the effort by using the hashtag on social media.
