I was so happy with my last Cono Sur Bicicleta purchase that I had to buy this Pinot Noir when I saw it. Cono Sur holds a special place in my heart since this was the winery we used for most of our wedding wine in 2009. While this isn’t my favorite Pinot, I still enjoyed it even though I’m not sold on buying it regularly. Overall, the price is a little too steep and the taste a little too bland for me to buy on a regular basis. I’ll try to keep my eyes pealed for when it is on sale because I just don’t think this is worth $12.99.
Wine- Cono Sur Bicicleta Pinot Nior 2013
Store- Whole Foods (can be found at most major markets)
Region- Chile
Price- $12.99
Tasting notes- The winemakers notes on the bottle are pretty spot on. They say it is a fresh, voluptuous Pinot Noir with rich notes of cherry, blackberries and plum together with a balanced ripe palate. While I agree that the flavors are balanced, I don’t think it delivers on being fresh and voluptuous. The flavors are good, but they aren’t as fresh and exciting as I wanted them to be. The nose was the best part of the experience with its signature ripe and fruity aroma that made it’s way to the back of the throat in one swift smell. I found the nose to be light and balanced while the initial taste was a bit of a let down, followed by the lackluster finish. I expect Pinots to be light, but this was a little too light for my liking.
Pairing ideas- We paired this with Greek BLTs. It paired very well with the feta dressing. This would also go well with grilled chicken and all red meats.
Final verdict- 3/5 stars. I took one star away from price and another from the boring initial taste. This isn’t a bad Pinot, it just won’t be on my top 10 list anytime soon. After my good experience with Cono Sur Cabernet, I was a little disappointed with this one. I’m not giving up yet! I’ll keep trying the Bicicleta wines until I’ve had them all.
