Why do I keep doing this to myself? I keep buying bottles of wine for $2.99 and expecting them to be just as good as Two Buck Chuck. I bought this Lindeman’s Bin 45 Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 from Total Wine because I’m in LOVE with the Bin 50 Shiraz. At this point in my wine tasting game I should know better than to think that a fabulous Cabernet would come out of Australia. While there are some good ones, Australia is better known for Shiraz (a.k.a. Syrah). I’m definitely sticking with the Lindeman’s Bin 50 Shiraz 2010 from now on, no more Cab Sav for me.
Wine- Lindeman’s Bin 45 Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Store- Total Wine & More
Region- Australia
Price- $2.99
Tasting notes- The nose is tangy with a surprisingly pleasant currant undertone. I’m finding that while I enjoy black currant flavors from more expensive wines, I’ve yet to find a “cheap” wine with black currant that I like. I enjoyed the currant on the nose and hated the bitterness on the tongue. I think it was missing some other flavor such as oak to balance out the flavors. The bottle claims that the wine has a smooth finish and I wholeheartedly disagree. I found it to be dry and abrupt with the overly alcoholic taste that is so common in cheap wines.
Pairing ideas- While I wouldn’t pick this wine again, I think it wouldn’t taste too terrible with something smoky such as barbeque. I can see the tanginess pairing well with smokiness.
Final verdict- Two stars. One for price and another for the pleasant nose. I wonder if I would feel different if I enjoyed the taste of black currants.
Have you had this wine? If so, what did you think?
