A big thank you to Hilarye Fuller from Dotting the Map & Get Essential Oils for putting this guest post together about how her family learned to save money with essential oils.
A few years ago I saw that essential oils were starting to get a lot of hype. I noticed quite a few pins on Pinterest about essential oils, a few friends mentioned they were using them, and just more and more people discussing essential oils online. To be completely honest I did not understand what the big deal was and why people would use them and even HOW people used them.
Illnesses
Fast forward a few months and I was dealing with a child who was getting sick fairly regularly. Almost monthly my daughter was down for a week with some unexplained fever. I took her to her doctor, took her to specialists, only to be told it was some infection and prescribed antibiotics. This was really frustrating for me! Not only was I spending all this money on tests, co-pays and prescriptions but we weren’t really fixing anything and I had no clue to what was happening!
Out of answers and desperate to do anything to help my daughter I turned to my friend who educated people on and sold essential oils. I told her what was going on and she suggested some solutions for our family. She wasn’t a doctor, wasn’t a medical professional in any sense she was just a mom like me who cared about her family and their health and took the time to educate and empower herself. I’ll be honest. I was 100% skeptical when I brought home some oils to try out. But once I saw the support they were giving to my family’s health and wellness, I was sold. I returned and bought a starter kit so I could make sure to always have the oils on hand to support our health and wellness.
A worthwhile investment
When I invested in that starter kit, I was pretty nervous about spending that much cash…..on oils. My husband wasn’t so stoked either. But looking back I can see how much that investment has actually saved my family not only money, but stress and heartache as well. I also have learned that since you are using so little of essential oils per application- only one to two drops- the bottles last a long time and it’s only pennies per drop.
Here are some ways we’ve saved money with essential oils:
We save money on co-pays.
Sick visits are the worst because they usually include follow up appointments and prescriptions. Now, I’m a mom first and I always advocate for moms to use their intuition with their kids. I believe it is a gift to allow us to discern and advocate for our children when they need help. But our essential oils are always our first line of defense and I’m pleased to say that we haven’t had to have a sick visit in almost two years. A pretty big deal for us considering it used to be monthly and I have four kids 7 and under!
We have shifted our consumer behaviors.
Truthfully this was an unintentional byproduct of bringing essential oils into our home. We started using Peppermint essential oil for occasional head tension, and Lavender for bug bites and burns and we started wondering- what else is possible? That’s when after a little bit of research we found a slew of recipes and easy DIY projects we could do using essential oils.
We don’t buy any household cleaners, we make our own super simple all natural and toxin free cleaners using things most people have around the house and Lemon oil. No more running to the drugstore for fever medicine or tummy medicine in the middle of the night because we have these handy bottles of essential oils at our disposal.
We save money with a monthly program
We are part of an optional monthly ordering program with our preferred essential oil company that allows us to earn free products, free shipping and free essential oils and health and wellness products. I can’t remember the last time I bought shampoo, conditioner, laundry soap, or toothpaste. We get them free as part of our participation in a monthly ordering program.
What I love so much is just for buying things my family needs anyways like vitamins, deodorant or a bottle of Lavender we earn points for free products and have some of the highest quality, all natural, toxin free products in our home.
Reducing the toxic load of our family was not something that was done intentionally but now that it has happened naturally and organically at a slow and steady pace, I see that we are healthier both physically and emotionally and this itself is worth it’s weight in gold.
A few things you should know about buying essential oils:
Not all essential oils are created equally. There is no governing body over essential oils like the FDA so anyone out there can put a 100% pure or label their essential oils as Therapeutic. Now that the industry has exploded everybody wants a piece of the pie. The problem with that is there are a lot of really crappy oils that are being sold out there. Oils that are littered with synthetics or fragrance oils. Which means they won’t work very well and even can do some harm.
You want to be very picky on the oils you use on your family and your body so I always caution people to do your research. Don’t just rush to your nearest health foods store, organic store and definitely not Walmart and buy up a bottle Lavender. Even if it is labeled Organic it could take half the bottle to be effective if it’s watered down and that is not healthy.
A few things you want to look for: transparency in publishing the testing reports done on every batch of oil that is accessible to the public. Sourcing oils where they are grown in their highest quality. And also finding someone you trust to walk you through how to use the oils safely and effectively for your family.
