Want to give back this holiday season? Me too! My problem is spending too much money. That’s why I’ve put together a few tips on how to be charitable without spending any money.
The holiday season is without a doubt the best time of year. It’s so much fun to see everyone over flowing with holiday cheer, happiness, and generosity.
The only downside to such enormous generosity is that many people don’t have extra money to give during the holidays. I personally know several people who give money to charities even when they can’t afford it. It pains me to see people I know struggle to pay bills, but still donate money to charities.
Part of me is so proud of my friends for having such generous hearts, but another part of me wants to shake them and say, “No! Stop doing this. Take care of your own financial responsibilities first!”
The great news is that you can give back this holiday season without spending a dime. It’s simple to be charitable without spending any money.
Here are 3 of my favorite ways:
Donate your time
Our family prefers to give back to the community by volunteering our time. We aren’t in a financial situation to donate a lot of money, so we give our time instead. The best way for us to find ways to donate time is through our church. Our church community is always sharing needs of the community.

Another way to find organizations that need help is through the local news. Head to the website for your local news and you can find all sorts of ways to get involved.
Still can’t find a way to donate your time? Find an organization that interests you and ask if they need help. Chances are they do!
Donate a photo
This is so cool! Since 2013, every photo shared through the free Donate a Photo app*, Johnson & Johnson donates $1 to one of its trusted non-profit partners, chosen by the user. Since it launched, there have been over 1.75 million photos donated. That’s a lot of donated money!
I’ve been having so much fun with this app because I can share photos of my kids on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, while raising awareness for this great cause. I’m a little obsessed with this picture I shared!
There are 46 charities to choose from, but Save the Children is the most important to note because Johnson & Johnson is committed to matching $10 million in a three year period. Pretty great, right? You can even pick out a gift in the “Save the Children” catalog.
You can donate one photo to one charity everyday. Head here to download the free Donate a Photo app.
Donate your gently used stuff
I know that there are some people who frown upon donating your old stuff as opposed to buying new. I understand that many times new is best.
For those times that you can’t buy new for charities, donate your gently used items instead. Many charities accept gently used items to sell at their own local thrift shops. This is a great way for you to give to your favorite charity without spending money.
What are your favorite ways to be charitable without spending any money?
*Johnson & Johnson has curated a list of trusted causes, and you can donate a photo to one cause, once a day. Each cause will appear in the app until it reaches its goal, or the donation period ends. If the goal isn’t reached, the cause will still get a minimum donation.
