We only have about three weeks until we move! Tom and I are constantly planning and talking about where we will put all our furniture, as well as what new furniture we need to buy. While I’m crazy excited to be in a house as opposed to an apartment, I’m nervous about how to fit my home office into our new home. When WeWork asked me to blog about my workspace, I knew it would be the perfect push for me to officially start planning out my new workspace.
Even though our new house is technically bigger than our apartment, we are losing a little bit of living space when it comes to our play area and home office. Currently, my workspace and the play room are both housed in the old screened porch that was enclosed for more space. Sharing my workspace with a baby and a toddler isn’t the ideal situation, however it’s pretty convenient for when Robert and Jackson are both entertained and I have a quick minute to jump on my computer. Here’s a quick look at my current workspace.
I love my desk and it’s functionality. I’m not actually the type of person who has to work at a desk, however I like the large space for my printer, craft supplies, and household documents. Moms tend to manage all the household documents like social security cards, tax documents, and birth certificates. I prefer to keep those safe in my desk.
In our new home we will have an area set up as a playroom, but it’s not big enough to double as my home office. We don’t have any other space that can hold my desk other than my bedroom. I’ve never been a fan of putting a workspace in the bedroom. In fact, I don’t even like having the TV in our bedroom. I like for my bedroom to be a complete relaxation oasis where I can unplug, unwind, and escape from the stresses of the world.
[bctt tweet=”I like for my bedroom to be a complete relaxation oasis where I can unplug and unwind.”]All the clutter on the desk would stress me out if I had to see it in my bedroom every night. Currently, I can’t see my desk unless I’m in the play room/ office area. It could be crazy messy and it wouldn’t bother me because I only see it when I’m sitting down to work.
Even though I can’t add more square footage to give myself my dream home office, I can find ways to fit my current desk into my bedroom while preserving the oasis-like vibe that I crave.
If I had it my way, I’d sell my current desk and start from scratch with something like the desk below. I like that it doubles as a night stand. All you have to do is close the laptop and you’d never even know the bedroom doubled as a home office. Even though I really want a new desk, we need to spend our money on other areas of the home first. We are going to have to keep my desk and try to make it work in our bedroom.

The biggest problem I see is that my current desk is black. Lately, I have been feeling very inspired to lighten things up in our house with softer colors. I know it is a possibility to paint the desk, but I’m not willing to put that much effort into it when we have so many other things I need to do first. Feeling overwhelmed, I took to Pinterest to find some inspiration. This is what I’m going to attempt, sans shelf.

All I have to do is take off the hutch and suddenly it’s a brand new desk! I also love the pop of color. I even think I’m going to change out the pulls on my desk to add a little bling. Changing out the chair is also going to make a dramatic difference.
Apparently I’m not the only one who has had an issue determining how to incorporate a workspace into a house. WeWork has the solution! They offer workspaces in 16 cities around the world, 12 in the United States. Check out this trendy workspace in Miami, complete with common areas and a conference room. I wonder how long until they set up a workspace in Naples. I’d be up for renting one!
Moving day will be here before I know it. I’m sure I’ll be too busy to get my workspace just right for a couple of weeks, maybe even months. When I do get it exactly like I want it, I’ll let you know!
What is in your dream workspace? Do you currently have a perfect home office?
3 weeks til moving day!! Let me know what I can do to help! :-)
I love our current workspace/home office! Our garage. The foam floor is awesome!! :-) Great for having the kids in there with us. I’m sure once you figure out your home office space it’s going to look great. ;-)
You’re home office is pretty amazing! Maybe I could talk Tom into letting me convert our garage to a craft room.
I currently don’t have a workspace, so my ideal would be to have it! I have a desktop computer with a nice big screen but it is in a room full of stuff! We are going to be moving soon so hopefully I’ll be able to have my own work area. Working on a desktop is so much better for me than huddling around my laptop on the couch or in bed.
I’m saving up my blog money for a desktop. I like the feel of them and I like that I can store more pictures. I can’t sit on the couch or bed and work either. I try from time to time and it never works out.
