We did it! We survived a couple days feeding a baby without a functional fridge. I’m not going to lie. It was tough and I had to get creative. Since I didn’t want to waste any of the food in our freezer we had some interesting food combinations for meals.
One night we had pizza veggie burgers with roasted carrots and green peas, the next night we had takeout BBQ from Whole Foods with a side of roasted sweet potatoes that I made. We had a lot of veggie burgers for lunches and frozen waffles for breakfast. I had to pick up some fruit and veggies that would stay safe at room temp. We got nectarines, bananas, avocados, pears, apples and sweet potatoes. I have to admit, eating without refrigeration wasn’t all that bad.
Here’s a pic of them hauling the old one away.
This was a perfect time to clean behind the fridge How often are you supposed to do that? Every time you get a new one?
The worst part of this whole ordeal is that our new fridge DOESN’T have an ice maker. Sigh. The delivery man said it was only an extra $60. Not going to lie, I’m feeling a little annoyed at the landlords. Had they asked, I would have paid the $60 myself for the icemaker. I pouted and felt sad for a few hours. Then I realized what a #firstworldproblem this is. Yes, I now speak in hashtag. Seriously though, it isn’t a big deal to not have an ice maker. I should be thankful that I even have clean water, right? I’m trying to stay positive (#100happydays) so I broke out the old ice tray. We have a trendy cube one because it is impossible to find ice trays at Target since everyone has ice makers these days.
And that is my experience living without a fridge for a few days. I wouldn’t want to do it again, but it wasn’t the end of the word.
Who else has had appliances break while renting a place? Was it easy or hard to deal with your landlord? Our landlord took care of us. I am thankful to have a good landlord who didn’t make us live without a fridge for too long. I’m dreading letting him know that the dryer is rusty and starting to ruin clothes…
Good Job momma! Sounds like you kept it healthy! We don’t rent but have had to replace a broken fridge before. We ended up using our large cooler filled with ice, to use up the last of the frozen food. It really does cost a lot to replace all the lost food. Even just the condiments could be over $30. $5 worth of ice saved us probably over $100 in condiments and frozen food until we had our new fridge installed. We also had to buy a new dryer and ended up with a refurbished one which only cost $200 and has worked perfectly for 4 years now!
Oh yeah! The cost of ice is well worth it. We def need a new dryer too.
