Happy Wednesday! Today for What I Spent Wednesday, I’m going to tell you about a new challenge I’m taking on. I’m going to participate in the Minsgame, a minimalist challenge where you give up 465 items during the month of November. On day one you get rid of one item, on day two you get rid of two items, and so on until you get rid of 31 items on the last day of the month.
I had never heard about it until I read this post from Heather at Simply Save (photo above from her blog). I’ve been following Heather for a while, and I’m always impressed with her saving skills. I figured if she was in for this challenge, it had to be a good one. She doesn’t seem to be one to mess around. She’s partnered up with 3 other bloggers for this challenge and they are inviting everyone to join them. If you’ve ever thought of living a simpler life and reducing clutter, now is the time to get rid of that baggage and join the challenge. They are calling it #MinsgameBOSS, BOSS being an acronym for all of their blogs. I don’t think I can do justice explaining the challenge. Head over to Heather’s blog to learn more about minimalism. Maybe she’ll convince you to join too!Could you get rid of 465 items this month for the #MinsgameBOSS? Click To Tweet
I’ve long wanted to live a minimalist lifestyle. I crave it for many reasons. The first being that I hate clutter. The second being that I hate cleaning dust off of clutter. I’m happiest when I have a few items surrounding me that mean something to me.
My challenge is that I love to entertain. It’s not feasible to live a true minimalist lifestyle where you only have two forks when you enjoy entertaining 20 guests. For that reason I try to buy re-usable and multipurpose items I enjoy for entertaining. A mason jar can easily do double duty as a cup for one party and a centerpiece for the next. Enough about minimalist party planning. I feel like I can go on and on. I won’t bore you with it today. Instead I’ll get to the meat of this post and fill you in on everything I plan to get rid of this week.
I’m going to focus on the garage and kids’ rooms for this challenge. I don’t have time to walk around my house and get rid of the items each day. Instead, I’m going to spend 2 hours each weekend organizing the garage and purging. Here is how I did this past Sunday:
So far I’ve put aside 71 items to donate or give away. Seventy one! In only two hours! Four of the items were given back to my mother in law. I have a few items I’d like to sell on eBay as well. I’m hoping to make a little Christmas money from this project. I’ll update you throughout the month on how I’m doing.
As for What I’ve Spent Wednesday, I’m not doing well. We have a lot of bills coming out this week, including paying our final rent check on top of our first mortgage payment. Eek! It only makes sense to spend less this week. I tried to spend less, but still went over budget. Here is how I did:
Publix- $44.32- final goodies for Halloween get togethers
Second Publix trip- $46.45
Walmart- $90.47 ($75 will be reimbursed from a sponsored blog post)
Amazon- Christmas pajamas! $26 total for the boys- I think that is a steal. Plus I got 3% back through Ebates!
Keeping track of my spending is a powerful tool. I always think I’ve spent less than I actually have. If you don’t keep track of your spending, I highly suggest you do it. You may be surprised to see where you spend the bulk of your money. You may be surprised to see where your money goes once you start tracking your spending Click To Tweet
Even though I don’t have much extra time to coupon, I’m seriously considering doing it again. I hate spending $200 each week. I need to work harder to get back down to $150.
How did you do this week on your budget? What do you think about becoming a minimalist?
