When I was growing up my mom always had a cabinet in the laundry room set aside for gifts. I never remember my mom enjoying shopping (I don’t know where I got it from). So when she saw something on sale she would buy it and place it in the gift cabinet. I was the oldest of three girls at that time so she had to keep a variety of gift, toddler toys for impromptu birthday parties, candles and bath stuff for my friends, and even gifts for her friends.
When we moved into our current house I realized that I finally had enough room for a gift cabinet.
Right now they are being used as stocking stuffer bins. Each bin is for a different family member.
This has worked out wonderful for my Secret Santa at work. Everyday last week I was able to give her nice gifts that I had picked up throughout the year- candles, comfy socks, a cute stuffed monkey, bath stuff.
So how can you start this? My advice- get baskets from the dollar tree and get started. I periodically go to Home Goods, T.J. Maxx, Ross, Bealls Outlet and Big Lots. DON’T BUY CRAP JUST TO BUY IT! Make sure it is something you would be proud to give as a gift.
This has also worked out very well for my Christmas gifts, not just stockings. My mom loves stationary and all office supplies. These things are always super cheap at the above mentioned stores. I pick them up throughout the year for up to 90% off and I don’t have to spend money at Christmas.
Find out what your loved ones collect or enjoy. Pick it up throughout the year and you will have extra cash later. I understand this can’t work well for small children, but try it with older kids and friends.
