Staying healthy, mentally and physically, as a caregiver is no easy feat. It’s hard enough to take care of yourself when you only have yourself to take care of. When given the task of taking care of someone else, it’s easy to forget to take care of yourself. This is especially hard as a caregiver, not just a parent. It’s so hard to manage another adult’s money and social calendar.
That’s why I’m so happy to partner with TeaWell™ Organic Wellness Teas (get a BOGO coupon here) to talk to you about the importance of self care. This is a topic that I feel really strong about, and I want to make sure YOU are taking care of yourself too! I found the tea during my very first trip to Sprouts. Did you see that outing on my Instagram and Facebook? We had so much fun.
Before I get too big on my self care soapbox, I just have to remind you one more time about the BOGO on TeaWell Organic Wellness Teas at Sprouts. I’ve really enjoyed sipping on this tea and know you will too if you are a fan of tea.
Now, back to taking care of ourselves! Keep reading to get to the meat of this post.
Caregivers Have to Take Care of Themselves First
We all know that in order to take care of others, we have to take care of ourselves. This isn’t new information! Even though we know it, this advice isn’t always easy to follow. It’s easier to keep giving and giving and giving until you burn out, right?
I would know. As a mom of three young boys, I’ve been known to put off my own health to take care of my boys. I wasn’t the best at caring for myself when I became a caretaker for my mom. A few weeks after she moved in, I knew I had to shift my priorities and take my own health more seriously.
I’m no expert. After all, I’ve only had mom living with us for a little over 4 months. I’m sure I still have a lot to learn. However, these last few months have taught me a lot about how to take care of myself.
Here are the core tips I’m currently following to stay healthy as a caregiver:
Exercise- I’m actually working out more because it’s an excuse to get out of the house and away from the kids and my mom. I hate running, but when I get the chance to run around the neighborhood at night once Tom gets home, I’m gone.
Eat well & Drink Lots of Water- Seeing other people sick makes me want to eat healthy and drink lots of water. I’ve been working on getting all my nutrients, drinking tons of water, and tea. I’m happy to add TeaWell Teas to my routine because the new brand of flavorful organic wellness teas features the Daily Wellness Core, a smart all-in-one blend of herbs and botanicals that have traditionally been used to support the mind and body.
Boost Immunity- On top of eating well and exercising, I’ve been doing everything to boost my immunity. And I mean everything. I stocked up on essential oils, bought elderberry syrup, and of course, stocked up on tea. The antioxidant support* of the green roobios found in all 4 flavors is prized across generations in South Africa for its powerful polyphenol antioxidant properties.
Protect Alone Time– I love my family, but I also need to get away from all care taking duties every now and then. That’s why I protect my alone time. I spend most Saturday mornings alone either working on my compost company, working on my blog, or just reading all by myself.
Find a Hobby- A friend of mine recently commented that I sure do like to stay busy. Ha! Yes, I do. It’s mostly because it’s a great way to get your mind off of all the crazy things going on in life. Gardening and learning to hand letter are my two current hobbies that bring me so much joy. I love that these are hobbies that I can do with my mom and the kids around too.
Stay Social- Remembering to take time for friends, church, and other social activities has been important for me. If I didn’t make time to do something outside of my normal day to day routine, I’d go crazy.
I could go into detail about the importance of each of my core tips, but let’s get real, you already know this information. It’s not new! These are important core tips for a happy life, not just while taking care of someone else.
Be sure to go into a Sprout store near you to try TeaWell™ for yourself!…Don’t have a Sprouts near you? No problem, see here to find a retailer near you. Find it in the tea and coffee aisle.
