Happy Thursday! I’m glad it’s a new day because last night wasn’t the best. I got pulled over for not having a working license plate light. Whoops. I also didn’t have my insurance on me. I feel so stupid because if I had gotten a ticket instead of a warning it would have been a colossal waste of money. Put your insurance in your car! That was more of a reminder to me, not you.
Anyway, I’m so glad Thursday is finally here. It’s the best day of the week because Shonda Rhimes is a writing genius. I can’t wait to see what happens on TGIT tonight. Grey’s Anatomy is still my favorite after all these years. I think I’ll carve out a huge piece of king cake and hunker down in my bed for three hours while watching TV.
This week has been full of all sorts of thrifty and not so thrifty adventures. The adventures in king cake definitely takes the cake. See what I did there?
I somewhat successfully made a king cake from scratch!
I consider this a success because the yeast was activated. My biggest fear in baking is that I won’t activate the yeast. I’ve only baked bread three times and right now I’m 3 for 3 and feeling pretty damn cocky about it. This means I’m bound to mess up soon. Luckily I didn’t mess up on this beauty.
I used this recipe and think it turned out really well for a new baker. It’s not exactly like a bakery king cake, but it’s pretty close. I’d like to try it again with more cinnamon, more sugar, and possibly a mixture of cake flour with AP flour. Look at me talking like I know something about flour. I don’t. I still know nothing. Even so, I think I can make this better next time. Mine got a little too big because I didn’t roll the dough in the right shape.
I also very successfully ordered a king cake from Louisiana
Even though I just made one, I decided to go ahead and order our king cake from Haydel’s. We’ve rotated between Haydel’s and Randazzo’s in the past couple of years and we always forget which one we like best. I was going to do Randazzo’s this year, but they are already sold out!
This was not a thrifty purchase whatsoever! I like to consider this purchase as one of our big splurges. We didn’t need it, but we really wanted it. I probably sound crazy to all the people who have never had authentic king cake. I promise, once you’ve had it, you will understand.
I’m thinking about buying this king cake mix for the future
King Arthur is my favorite flour. Is it weird to have a flour preference when you don’t even know how to bake well? I had one bad experience with bugs in my cheap flour and never went back. You know I’m cheap but King Arthur flour is worth the extra money to me for some reason. I blame it on the bugs.
Anyway, Tom’s aunt emailed me about this kit and I think I might buy it if the king cake craving persists throughout my pregnancy.
We had another House Party!
I was selected to throw an Arla Dofino cheese party through House Party. This was my second House Party, my first was the Mega Bloks party. Unfortunately, Tom got the same stomach bug that Robert and I had. We were supposed to throw the party on Super Bowl Sunday as a preparty to the game. Instead I had to throw it on Tuesday at my play date. It still worked out fine but Tom was bummed that he didn’t get to see all the kiddos play together. Watching the kids play is so much fun!
Everyone loved the cheeses and I had to send some home with my friends. It was so much food! We still have some left over. My favorites were the dill Havarti and the chipotle lime Gouda.
More freebies came in the mail
This was from BzzAgent and we loved it! I’m excited to have the opportunity to make steel cut oats without spending a bunch of time making them.
I already stopped couponing
This one makes me sad. I wanted to give it more of a shot, but I was spending $5 on papers each week only to find that most of the coupons I needed were printable. I haven’t completely given up couponing yet. I’m still going to do printable coupons and stop my newspaper coupons. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep up with the printable ones.
