Tom and I recently watched a Ted Talks video of a man named Adam Baker. His talk was very inspiring and left us with a lot to talk about that night.
The subject of his talk was to figure out what freedom means to you. He shared his story about how he and his wife decided that they wanted to be free of all debt and use their money to travel. During his story he talked about how we all seem to get into this cycle of looking around our houses and trying to figure out what we need to upgrade next. Has this ever happened to any of you? I know it has happened to us. Once we get money, it is easy to fall into the rut of constantly upgrading.
Believe me, I have these thoughts daily. It is easy to think about upgrades when you have a dryer that is rusting on your clothes, a microwave that takes forever, and a stove with a broken element. I needed to hear this Ted Talks because it reminded me of my own financial goals. Instead of trying to upgrade the things around me, I need to continue to be happy with the things I have so we can continue to pay off our loans at a quicker rate.
Instead of looking around my house and trying to figure out what needs to be upgraded, I’m going to make more of an effort to see these things as opportunities to save more money towards our own goals of living debt free. A friend of mine recently asked if we would use Tom’s raise to rent a nicer apartment or house. While the thought has crossed my mind, I’d rather stay in this inexpensive rental for as long as possible. Looks like we won’t be upgrading our housing situation anytime soon. Let’s just hope the landlord doesn’t increase the rent!
How often do you think about upgrading things?
