Last Easter season, just a few days before Easter Sunday, there was a knock on our door. When we went to answer the door we found out that we’d been egged! No, not egged with real eggs. The “You’ve Been Egged” Easter Activity is similar to the “You’ve Been Boo-ed” Halloween activity where baskets of seasonal goodies are left at your doorstep by friends or neighbors. Read this post to get all the details on how to start egging your neighborhood.
The Meaning Behind the You’ve Been Egged Tradition
While similar to the You’ve Been Boo-ed tradition, the You’ve Been Egged tradition has a little more meaning. Leaving one egg empty to symbolize Jesus’ empty tomb allows this tradition to be a faith based educational family activity.
I don’t know who started the tradition, but if you Google it or look on Pinterest, you can find all sorts of different ways to egg someone. Every blogger offers a different spin on it, but there are two similarities in each of them:
- 12 eggs are hidden in the yard
- One egg is left empty to symbolize Jesus’ empty tomb
You’ve Been Egged Supplies
- 12 plastic Easter eggs
- Lots of goodies to fill the Easter eggs
- Optional Easter basket
- Printable explaining how it works (print 2 so your neighbor can keep it going)
How to Egg Someone This Easter Season
It’s simple to egg a friend or neighbor. Here is a step by step guide to starting the “You’ve Been Egg-ed” tradition with your friends and neighbors:
- Gather supplies and fill 11 of the 12 eggs.
- Print out 2 copies this simple printable (download it here). Print out 2 so your friend can easily keep it going. They can make a copy of it or come back here to print out another one.
- Cut it in half and put both pieces into an Easter basket.
- Go to your friends house and hide all 12 eggs in the yard.
- Leave the Easter basket with directions at their doorstep.
- Ring the door and leave quickly!
You can even go a step further and leave a little basket of extra goodies with the signs in the basket.

What to put in your “You’ve Been Egged” Basket
You don’t have to leave an Easter basket, but if you do you can add a few fun Easter goodies too.
Definitely make sure to include the printable that explains how this works!
Then you can add some extra Easter eggs, chalk eggs, Easter candy, or some homemade goodies.
I think it would be fun to put confetti eggs from Walmart. Or make your own! They are only $1.98 in store for a dozen. I always buy a ton of these each Easter because me kids love them so much.
I’m a huge fan of making homemade goodies for activities like this. Let’s be real, no one wants more candy or dollar tree crap right before a holiday.
You can see the homemade goodies we make for the You’ve Been Boo-ed tradition.
Don’t Forget Your You’ve Been Egg-ed Printable
Make sure to include this fun printable for your neighbors and friends. Print one out for them and encourage them to come back here and print out another one if they choose to pass on the good news!

You can even print out two of them so they can go ahead and have it to pass on to their friends and neighbors.
